Professor of Practice Position in Actuarial Science (Job #12255)

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure eligible position in actuarial science at the rank of Professor of Practice. The anticipated start date is Fall 2018. The actuarial science program at Arizona State began admitting students into its Bachelor of Science degree program in fall, 2014 and already enrolls over 100 undergraduate students. The School plans to significantly increase both the size and stature of this program in the next few years.

The essential duties of the position will be high quality teaching

in classes relevant to our undergraduate actuarial curriculum leading up to

being credentialed at the Associateship level as recognized by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS)

along with student mentoring and appropriate professional service.

It is anticipated that the full-time teaching load will be three classes per semester or equivalent in addition to mentoring and service activities. Mentoring activities will involve helping students train for the certification exams together with overseeing student honors and research projects. Service activities will involve curriculum and professional development for our growing actuarial science program.

Applicants are required to have a Masters Degree in actuarial science or a closely related field such as mathematics or statistics by August 10, 2018 and be credentialed (at the associateship or fellowship level) with either the SOA or CAS or a society mutually recognized by the SOA or CAS. In addition, candidates must demonstrate the potential for

excellent teaching in the actuarial science curriculum including but not limited to material that prepares for the preliminary actuarial exams. Desired qualifications include a Ph.D. in actuarial science or closely related field, experience as an actuarial analyst,

a documented record of instruction and student mentoring, and demonstrated success working with diverse student and/or faculty populations.

The actuarial science program resides within the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, which currently has 53 full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members and approximately 47 lecturers, senior lecturers, principal lecturers, and professors of practice. In addition to the B.S degree in actuarial science, the School offers bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. programs in applied mathematics, mathematics, mathematics education, and statistics. The School has a sizable teaching load that serves all majors on campus. Excellent computing resources are available in the School that include individual faculty workstations as well as access to the University's central computing facilities and the High Performance Computing Initiative. The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences has a strongly interdisciplinary research and instruction profile that includes numerous collaborations inside and outside the university, in areas such as the social sciences, education, physical sciences, engineering, biological sciences, medicine, and environmental sciences.

The Tempe campus of Arizona State University has approximately 60,000 students. It is located in the rapidly growing metropolitan Phoenix area, which provides a wide variety of recreational and cultural opportunities. The surrounding countryside is very attractive to outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, biking, skiing, and other activities in the exquisite Arizona canyon lands and mountainous terrain.
