Performs actuarial pricing reviews and analyses of all of the NORCAL Group’s rates as well as key rating elements and factors. Responsible for key data retrieval systems for use in actuarial work and management reporting or analysis. Assists Underwriting Department in analysis of experience-rated policies and in pricing large accounts.
Essential Functions
: Individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The essential functions listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required with or without reasonable accommodation.
Performs the rate level analyses for the NORCAL Group, evaluating overall rate adequacy, pricing parameters and factors. Prepares regulatory and filing materials to support the desired actions. Responsible for maintaining monitoring tools for business segments and identifying changes, as needed.
Prepares analyses for rate related decisions and presents the actuarial work in a non-technical way when needed, incorporating input from various aspects of insurance disciplines and facilitating agreement on rate actions, adjustments, new programs, etc.
Works closely with Underwriting to provide actuarial guidance on large account, pricing or unusual coverage situations. Develops tools and data to continue to improve these services. Provides training to underwriters on actuarial tools and concepts.
Updates appropriate databases and methodologies for actuarial reviews, understanding the company’s underwriting and claims processes, business environment and incorporating such into the available data resources and analyses performed.
Extracts data for analyses from OASIS and other databases. Audits and tests for reasonableness of the data and resulting analysis.
Provides actuarial expertise in the pricing of products and coverages; provided general insurance background and knowledge to the situations, as needed.
Understands the financial position of the NORCAL Group and its underlying business segments, providing key inputs and financial support and analysis for pro-forma projections.
Provides actuarial and technical expertise to various projects, as identified, for the NORCAL Group or subsidiaries.

Employees must be able to pay for certain business expenses in advance. Examples include such items as airline tickets, rental cars, hotel deposits, seminar registrations, etc. Employees are eligible for reimbursement for such expenses through the NORCAL Group’s Expense Reimbursement Policy.

General office environment is primarily sedentary work which requires the following physical activities: standing, sitting, walking, reaching, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
Exposure to LCD on a daily basis.
A moderate noise level is usual.
Bachelors degree in quantitative related study required.
Successful completion of 4 - 7 examinations of the Casualty Actuarial Society.
Experience Required:
Minimum of 4 years of casualty actuarial work, some prior medical malpractice experience would be preferable.
Skills Required:
General knowledge of commercial lines and large account concepts.
Proficiency with MS Office including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint for actuarial analyses, technology applications and data utilization for the actuarial function.
Experience in handling technical detailed work.
Exhibit strong verbal and written communications skills, problem solving, decision making and organizational skills.
Able to develop relationships with a wide range of individuals in the company.
Able to take on new responsibilities and challenges as they arise, with minimal supervision.
