JOB TITLE: Director of Sales and Merchandising

FSLA Status: Exempt

Department: Sales and Merchandising

REPORTS TO: VP Sales and Merchandising

Responsible for the coaching and developing of operators of all Grocery Outlet stores within an assigned region. Responsible for supporting the efforts of the operators in the areas of store sales and merchandising, store appearance, marketing and profitable business growth by performing the following duties:

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for coaching and assisting operators in achieving profitable results in sales, marketing, merchandising and inventory management.

Supports the operator in the enhancement and development of the owner-operator model (60%)

Acts as a coach to the operator, including but not limited to the following:

Develops an annual business plan with the operator

Fosters the relationship of the operator and Grocery Outlet

Encourages participation of the operator in open dialogue to improve the overall profitability and success of the store

Supports the execution of chain, regional and local marketing efforts.

Assists in the development of new sales and merchandising strategies

Evaluates region and store performance (20%)

Reviews all elements of the Store Performance Scorecard and coaches/recognizes operators when improvement is needed or performance is achieved.

Strives for excellence by raising the level of standards of performance insuring proper presentation, merchandising and pricing of GOI inventory. Monitors and addresses product handling policies and procedures

Assists the operators in complying with Federal, State and local laws and regulations. (5%)

Assists the operators in remaining independent and non-union. (5%)

Evaluates the readiness of Aspiring Operators in Training (AOT’s) (10%)

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each job duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skill and/or ability required. B.A degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Five to ten years in the industry with two years in a management position

Thorough knowledge of the retail food business, through knowledge of perishable department operations, merchandising skills, must be able to make timely and effective decisions

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, financial statements, government regulations and legal documents

Ability to write presentations and present information effectively to top management, public groups, suppliers and/or operators

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manual

Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with all store operators and company personnel

Proficiency in MS Excel and MS Word

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

The physical demands and work environment described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. The employee possess the ability to stand in place for long periods of time; walk in the store; bend, stoop and kneel regularly. Requires fine finger and broad manual dexterity, and eye-hand-foot coordination in order to operate equipment. This position requires the employee have the ability to have full range of upper body motion in order to occasionally lift stock. Requires the ability to perform repetitive tasks for prolonged periods of time. Must possess functional sensory abilities in order to visually monitor the store, create attractive displays, and to operate equipment. Working conditions consists primarily of a temperature-controlled environment. The ability to work outside checking store property, in walk-in coolers or freezers for short periods of time is necessary. This job involves exposure to changing temperature and humidity (i.e. freezers, coolers and warehouse). Exposure to chemical cleaning agents, irritating or competing noises or other irritating substances, and working in areas with wet and slippery floors.
