Computer and information systems management jobs require one to facilitate computer-related activities in an organization by planning, coordinating, and directing research.
Nature of the Work

As technology is used to increase efficiency and reliability, computer information managers have key roles to play in implementing this technology in their firms. Computer and information systems management jobs require one to facilitate computer-related activities in an organization by planning, coordinating, and directing research. The managers are also involved in coming up with business plans, directing network security, and overseeing internet operations. They may suggest business and technological solutions to top management for the company to implement. This type of planning requires a good understanding of both business and technology practices.

Computer and information systems specialists oversee the work of programmers, systems analysts, and computer support technicians. They draw up plans to upgrade software and hardware. They are also involved in the installation, development, maintenance, and securing of intranets and other networks. These specialists may also do programming work themselves, in addition to implementing systems design and analyzing systems for their workability.

Computer and information systems specialists’ duties vary. For instance, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is responsible for reviewing the newest technologies available and recommending which ones will be beneficial to the company. He is also in charge of the daily technical issues of the firm, and plans and manages technical standards. He reports to the firm’s Chief Information Officer.
Management Information Systems directors are in charge of the computing resources of the company. They work under the CTO and direct and supervise subordinates. They ensure the continuous flow of data and information in the company, and may handle employee queries within the organization. In addition, they help to oversee the continuity of user services, and may handle customer queries regarding installation or upgrades of software and/or hardware.

Project managers formulate requirements and budgets for the firm’s technological projects. Working with other specialists, they come up with budget estimates and oversee the projects from conceptualization, to realization, to final development.

Education and Qualification

Computer and information systems management jobs require one to have strong education credentials as well as some experience in the industry. A management position may be given to someone with a bachelor’s degree, although applicants with an MBA, preferably with technology as a major, are preferred. This technology major emphasizes IT in addition to the normal business course components.

Some companies hire applicants with trade or associate degrees who are skilled and experienced. Some managers with associate degrees may acquire their bachelor’s or master’s degrees while working in order to advance in their career.

Computer and information systems specialists need a variety of skills to successfully take charge of their departments. Most employers prefer specialists with a background in business management or consulting, as well as experience in a relevant technology or software. The dynamic nature of e-commerce has made computer and information systems specialists highly regarded in business firms, and most specialists are influential in the firm’s decision making.

Computer and information systems management jobs require one to have advanced technical knowledge to guide the subordinate staff. It also requires the ability to explain the work in layman’s terms to non-technical staff, top management, and prospective customers. While no certification is necessary for computer and information systems specialists’ positions, a number of recognized certifications are advantageous when seeking a job. The certifications are usually specific to a single piece of hardware or software, and are administered by the company producing the product instead of independent associations.

As technology changes and computer systems become integrated into the daily operations of a business, computer and information systems specialists are required to be conversant with business practices. Good leadership, communication, and interpersonal relations skills are vital for interaction with other staff members. Good team skills are also vital in handling group projects and completing tasks in collaboration with others. A general understanding of how the business operates, generates revenue, and operates in the industry is also important. As a result, many firms prefer applicants who have other backgrounds in addition to the technical ones required.

Computer and information systems management jobs provide progressive opportunities for advancement. Technical managers may move to higher positions with time, and some may even be given positions in non-technical fields like human resources, sales, and marketing.

Job Outlook

Use of technology is rising quickly, and this increase is leading to a greater demand for computer and information systems specialists. The prospects are very promising for qualified applicants. Employment opportunities in the computer and information management industry are expected to grow as advanced and emerging technologies are put into use by firms.

Although there was a downturn in the technology sector at the beginning of this decade, computer management systems analysts will continue to be in demand as companies replace their outdated computers and install new networks and more sophisticated systems. Every company that wishes to remain competitive must have complex networks and intranets, and professional-quality websites. This will keep computer systems analysts in high demand at the workplace.

Computer and information systems specialists’ earnings depend on the amount of responsibility and specialty of the worker. Salaries average around $100,000, but depend on the company.

Conclusion

Qualified applicants for computer and information systems management jobs have very good job prospects. They will continue to be in demand in the coming years as new technologies and computer systems are developed. Qualified applicants with good communication skills and knowledge of business practices have better chances of landing jobs as employers shift to look for applicants with business management abilities.
